Outdoor Play Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect or Expensive

Posted by Jenny Nguyen on May 15th 2025

I hate to admit this, but I don’t take my kids outside to play as often as I should. Where we live, it always seems to be either too cold, too hot, or raining. And when the weather is nice, we’re battling allergies or getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.

That's why I'm taking full advantage of the weather right now. May and June are the perfect time for us to be outdoors. It’s that sweet spot before the summer heat really kicks in—so we’re trying to soak up as many park days as we can!

My kids were gifted a tricycle and scooter a while back. They’ve been such a hit! They’re both from a brand I trust, and I love that they’re adjustable so they’ll grow right along with the kids. The tricycle has a shade and a harness, two huge bonuses. We added a helmet and pad set for the scooter to keep everyone safe.

Recently, I spotted the same, gently used tricycle at my local Once Upon A Child. Many of their indoor and outdoor toys are in near perfect condition yet priced up to 70% less than regular retail. And, all toys and equipment go through a specific safety check before they hit their sales floor.

If you're looking for quality toys on a budget, Once Upon A Child has something for every kid! You can even sell the toys that your little ones have outgrown. One thing we don’t have yet is a water table—so next time I’m selling clothes there, I’m planning to look for one!

But honestly, you don’t need all the bells and whistles to encourage outdoor play.

Sometimes, we spend hours in the driveway with a bucket of chalk and a few bubble wands—simple, easy fun that keeps them busy for ages. For older kids, you can toss in a jump rope or a hula hoop. I keep all of it tucked away in the garage, ready to go whenever the kids get stir-crazy.

It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just get outside when you can and enjoy the fresh air.
