Seasonal Wardrobe Refresh: Thrifting, Layering, and Decluttering Tips for Parents

Hello, Once Upon A Child fans!
We’re in that in-between season—chilly mornings and warm afternoons. The only solution? Layers! My kids have some sweatsuits with small stains, but they still fit well. So, I decided to iron on patches to (1) hide the stains and (2) make them more fun to wear! These have been their go-to school outfits, paired with a T-shirt underneath for easy layering.
Spring also brings unpredictable showers, so I always check the raincoat section at Once Upon A Child—it’s such an underrated spot! My kids always need rain jackets on hand, and I recently found the cutest pink one for my daughter—the cherry graphic makes me smile. My son’s rain jacket was another great thrift find, and both are quality brands for a fraction of the price!
Speaking of changing seasons, now is the perfect time for a wardrobe declutter. Instead of making your kids try on every piece of clothing, try this hack: Pick one well-fitting item from each category and use it as a size reference. Clothes shrink, stretch, and vary in sizing by brand, so this trick makes sorting much easier.
If you ever feel discouraged when selling items—like when some great pieces don’t get bought—don’t give up! Stores sometimes have too much inventory or pass on items for other reasons. I simply store my unsold items and bring them back on my next selling day. I almost always end up selling them eventually.
Right now, my local Once Upon A Child is accepting all seasons, so I’ve already put together a box to sell next time I’m there. If you’re due for a declutter, now’s the perfect time!
