Back-to-School Essentials

Posted by Jenny Nguyen on Jul 21st 2023

Hey everyone! It’s Jenny, and I'm back with another blog! You might have noticed all the back-to-school supplies at your big box stores. It's an exhilarating time as kids and parents prepare for the school season. My kids are not in school yet; my son is 2 ½, and my little girl is only 9 months old. We also don’t send them to daycare, but Myles is going to a summer camp next week. It’s all very exciting and nerve-wracking for me, sort of our “back-to-school” moment.

There are so many things to consider when planning their outfits before you send them off. I’m thinking to myself, I’m not going to be there so he has to be as comfortable as possible. Weather also plays the most significant role in what we wear in our everyday lives. Some of us need to stock up on coats, some need more rain gear and some of us (like myself) are staying in shorts and t-shirts for a few more months. Luckily, at Once Upon A Child, the selection is curated by local customers and reflects the weather you experience in your area. Living in Texas, I can always find summer items and medium-weight jackets and sweaters.

When shopping, you may wonder if they would be comfortable in the clothes all day. Myles and Jesslyn (at their age) are most comfortable in knit clothing rather than woven tops and bottoms. Myles will be dressed in t-shirts and knit shorts during his camp, while button-up shirts and chino shorts will be saved for his Sunday best. Also, pay attention to how the clothing functions. Can they fasten their own clothes? If your child struggles with zippers and buttons, maybe hold off on jeans and 5-pocket pants. Honestly, you can never go wrong with pull-on bottoms, no matter their age. As for shoes, perhaps avoid laces until they can tie their own. For us, velcro straps or elastic shoes are the way to go!

Lastly, you can ask yourself is it something your kid would be excited to wear? The last thing you want is a wardrobe battle with your child early in the morning. My son is obsessed with dinosaurs and would be more than happy to get dressed if it involves dinosaurs and roaring. That’s why this mama is always on the hunt for cool dinosaur t-shirts. I suggest letting your kids come with you on your next shopping trip at Once Upon A Child so they can pick a few things out themselves! Happy back-to-school!
